What people ask before they order
Is this the same as the AREDS2 formula my doctor recommended?
TruVista Desert Truffle Plus AREDS2 contains all six nutrients used in the AREDS2 trial, at the doses used in that trial: vitamin C 500 mg, vitamin E 180 mg (equal to 400 IU), zinc 80 mg, copper 2 mg, lutein 10 mg and zeaxanthin 2 mg. It adds 500 mg of desert truffle extract. Bring the label to your next appointment — your doctor can confirm it matches what they intended.
Why does the label say 180 mg of vitamin E when AREDS2 says 400 IU?
They are the same amount. Labelling rules changed to require milligrams instead of international units. For the synthetic vitamin E used in the AREDS2 formula, 400 IU converts to 180 mg. Nothing has been reduced.
Which of the two products should I take?
If your eye doctor recommended an AREDS2 supplement, takeDesert Truffle Plus AREDS2— it replaces the AREDS2 you would otherwise buy. If you are not on AREDS2 and want general eye-health support, or you already take an AREDS2 you are happy with and want to add truffle extract alongside it, takeDesert Truffle Extract. If you are unsure, ask your eye doctor.
How do I take it, and when will I notice anything?
Two capsules daily with food. Each bottle is a 30-day supply.
On the second half of that question we will be straight with you: this is a dietary supplement intended to support macular health as part of your diet. It is not a treatment, and you should not expect a change in your vision from taking it. If your vision changes, contact your eye doctor.
Is high-dose zinc safe for me?
80 mg is the dose used in the AREDS trials, and the formula includes 2 mg of copper because sustained high zinc intake can deplete copper. Even so, this is a high dose: if you take other zinc-containing supplements, have kidney problems, or take medicines that interact with zinc, speak to your doctor or pharmacist first.
Can I take this alongside my other medicines?
Bring the label to your doctor or pharmacist and ask. The two things worth raising specifically are the 80 mg of zinc — because it can interact with certain antibiotics and with other zinc-containing supplements — and any blood thinner, because of the vitamin E.
